Good Intentions or Good Intentions?

The new year often begins with a wave of inspiration and a desire to make positive changes. We make plans, set goals and express our hopes for a better version of ourselves in the next 12 months. This striving for improvement often stems from good intentions and good intentions, but there is a difference between the two that is sometimes overlooked.

What are Good Intentions?

Good intentions are specific goals or actions that people set for themselves to achieve or accomplish during the new year. These resolutions are often concrete, measurable and time-bound. Typical examples include exercising more, eating healthier, quitting smoking, saving money, or learning a new skill.

Good resolutions are often made at the beginning of the year without enough planning, realism or a strategy to actually achieve them. As a result, they often fade soon after the first few weeks or months of the year. We can become discouraged if we cannot keep our resolutions right away, losing the motivation to persevere.

What are Good Intentions?

On the other hand, good intentions focus more on an overall mindset or approach to life, rather than on specific goals. It revolves around the intention to embrace positive change, to be kinder, to apply more self-care, to be open to new experiences, or to pay more attention to personal growth.

Good intentions are more flexible and less focused on achieving measurable goals. They are more about gradual development and growth throughout the year. Having good intentions allows you to focus on the journey of self-improvement rather than just achieving specific goals.

The difference

The difference between good intentions and good intentions lies in their nature: intentions are specific goals that are often measurable, while intentions are more focused on how we behave, think and grow.

How do you combine both?

The key to success is combining good intentions with good intentions. Start by setting achievable goals for yourself, but let those goals be driven by the intention to grow, learn and be kind to yourself, even if the path to those goals is bumpy.

To achieve this, it is important to:

  • Set realistic goals that are measurable and achievable.
  • Create a plan to achieve your resolutions one step at a time.
  • Be flexible and don't judge yourself too harshly if for once you don't achieve the none you envisioned.
  • Using your intentions as a compass to determine the direction of your actions.

This approach allows good intentions to thrive on a foundation of good intentions, making you more likely to make a lasting positive change in your life.

The New Year offers an opportunity for reflection, growth and self-improvement. The distinction between good intentions and good intentions is important because it affects the way we approach and pursue our goals. Integrating both can lead to a more balanced and effective approach to achieving change in our lives in the coming year.

Happy New Year!
